Hellenic Studies

Our "Hellenic Studies" program is an interdisciplinary academic program that focuses on the study of Greek language, culture, history, and society from the post-classical period to the present day, encompassing Byzantine and Ottoman eras, and modern Greece, drawing from the disciplines history, literature, anthropology, art history, political science, and linguistics to provide a comprehensive understanding of the region and its people across time. 

The Key aspects of a Hellenic Studies program:
  • Modern Greek Language:
A strong emphasis on learning and mastering the modern Greek language is central to most Hellenic Studies programs. 
  • Interdisciplinary Approach:
Courses will draw from various academic fields to explore different facets of Greek culture, including history, literature, art, philosophy, politics, and religion. 
  • Byzantine and Ottoman Influences:
Study of the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman occupation period in Greece is often included, as these historical eras significantly shaped modern Greek identity. 
  • Modern Greek Society and Politics:
Analysis of contemporary Greece, including its political landscape, social issues, and cultural developments. 
  • Regional Focus:
Exploration of the wider Mediterranean and Balkan context in relation to Greece.
